Arp 72 consists of NGC 5996 (VV 16a and others), the oddly-shaped spiral interacting with NGC 5994 (VV 16b and others), the smaller, less-deformed spiral. Both galaxies are located approximately 178 million light-years away in Serpens Caput.
Light rays from the bright magnitude 4.06 star Kappa Sepentis (HIP 77450) just off the top left corner impacted this image.

Imaged April 19th, 29th and May 1st and 2nd, 2017 from Dark Sky New Mexico at Rancho Hidalgo (Animas, New Mexico) with a SBIG STF-8300M on an Astro-Tech AT12RCT at f/8 2432mm.
