Here's an afocal photograph of the biggest surge that I've seen in quite a few years taken with a 40mm f/10 Coronado PST, a 30mm Celestron Ultima, and a Canon PowerShot SD980 IS digital camera. A surge is defined as "a transient prominence produced by flares or very active regions, appearing as a moderate to large collimated jet of gas rising up from the surface" at http://www.atscope.com.au/coronado.html
