Although total lunar eclipses are stunning events, partial eclipses involving the earth's penumbra and umbra are often considered non-events and not worthy of observation since the minute changes in the apparent magnitude of the moon are barely visible to the ground-based observer. However, as indicated by this image (at eclipse maximum), even a partial eclipse can provide an impressive visual display.
