This is the Cocoon Nebula, also known as IC 5146 and Sh-125. This nebula is located in northern Cygnus,imbedded deepin the Milky Way, thus the myriad of stars in this image! This is a very interesting and beautiful object. It is gas emission Nebula (red) and if you note all around the periphery of the red emitting gas is a subtle blue color ring – this is reflection off of dust that surrounds this object. You can see the star to the lower left of the nebula imbedded in a bright small pocket of the reflected blue dust. Note also the dark areas devoid of stars around the nebula – this is that same dust obscuring the background stars.
This was a 2.5 hour total exposure consisting of 50 separate exposures of 3 minutes each at f/7. The moon was
at 40%
