January 2010 Star Trails

Star trails taken from our driveway, pointing North, toward Polaris. The pattern is formed due to the camera's fixed position, and the Earth's rotation. The stars produce arcs of light about the celestial north pole. Polaris is the brightest arc nearest the center of rotation.

Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (at f/6.3)
Accessories: Lumicon 52mm→48mm step-down ring
Mount: Fixed tripod
Camera: Canon Digital Rebel T1i, Hap Griffin Baader modified
Filters: 2” Hutech IDAS LPS
Exposure: 48 x 300s @ ISO 100 (4hrs.)
Acquisition: ImagesPlus 3.80b Camera Control (JPG/fine)
Processing: ImagesPlus 3.80a – Normalized; Combined in Startrails v1.1
Post-processing: Adobe Photoshop CS4
