The Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405) in Hydrogen-alpha

The Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405, Sh2-229, Caldwell 31) is a combination emission/reflection nebula about 1500 light-years away in the constellation Auriga and is illuminated to magnitude 6.00 by the bright star AE Aurigae. The nebula is about 5 light-years across.

Telescope: Stellarvue SV80S LOMO @ f/6
Accessories: Stellarvue SFF6 field flattener; Dew control by Dew Buster
Mount: Orion Atlas EQ-G controlled by EQMOD
Guiding: TS-OAG9 Off-axis, using a Starlight Xpress Lodestar via PHD
Camera: Atik 314L+ Monochrome CCD @ -10.0C
Filters: Astronomik 6nm H-alpha
Exposure: 19 x 20min. (6hr. 20min.)
Acquisition: ImagesPlus 4.00 Camera Control
Processing: ImagesPlus 3.80a – Calibrated, DDP; registered in RegiStar
Post-processing: Adobe Photoshop CS4; Carboni’s Tools
