The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy (M83)

The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, M83, is a spectacular barred spiral galaxy which resides in the constellation Hydra. Since the Milky Way Galaxy is now believed to resemble a barred spiral galaxy, M83 provides us with an accurate representation of what our own galaxy might look like.  At nearly -30deg declination, this is a difficult target for northern observers and took three nights to collect enough integration time to compile this image.
