Released last spring, Cosmic Origins, a digital application from Astronomy magazine, has been nominated by Folio magazine for an editorial excellence award. The detailed, interactive digital app is nominated for one of Folio’s Eddie Awards, one of the highest awards for achievement in periodicals each year. Folio’s awards breakfast, at which the winners will be announced, will take place December 11, 2014, at the Yale Club in New York City.

Produced by the editors of Astronomy magazine and overseen by Associate Editor Liz Kruesi — now a contributing editor — the app allows users to interact with incredible graphics, watch videos, and view galleries of stunning images in this guide to the cosmos. Astronomy’s staff worked with top astronomers and science journalists to compile these immersive article packages to help readers understand the origin and evolution of the universe.

Four major sections each contains large quantities of information and graphics: How the universe began, How galaxies came to be, How stars form and evolve, and How the solar system formed.

Check out the Cosmic Origins app — there’s nothing else like it, and it’s great to have the industry leaders recognize that!
