Simon Kregar of the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA) writes about not one, but two, astronomical art shows looming in Tucson over the next few weeks.

Here is Simon’s message:

I am writing to you today on behalf of the International Association of Astronomical Artists to cordially invite you to not one, but two world-class space art shows in Tucson, Arizona, within a month of each other. As you know, Tucson is home to the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) as well as the Planetary Science Institute. We have been working with both groups to be able to promote an awareness of science and planetary sciences in Tucson and beyond.

The first show is the Art of Planetary Sciences art show hosted by the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Department of the University of Arizona. Last year’s show was magnificent, and this year the LPL is showing over 150 pieces of artwork, including works by Lucy West, Pamela Lee, Dan Durda, and Marilynn Flynn! The show runs October 17– 19. You can find more information here.

The second show, which opens November 14 and runs through December, is the culmination of the IAAA southwest workshop here in Tucson. The gala kickoff on the 14th is a celebration of the International Year of Light, an observance by the United Nations to aim awareness of the achievements of light science and its applications as well as its importance to humankind. This show also marks the end of the Division of Planetary Sciences Meeting, which we will also be attending. Artists such as Aldo Spadoni, Rick Sternbach, Pamela Lee, William K. Hartmann, and so many more will be showing, as well as an unveiling of Simon Kregar Jr.’s new work “The Queen of Saturn,” a homage to Carolyn Porco. Information can be found here.

If you are in the Tucson area, stop by and see these great exhibitions of astronomical art!
