Most of you know that Sheldon Reynolds — former guitarist and front man for Earth, Wind & Fire, member of the Commodores, and all-around good guy — is an astro enthusiast. He’s also a contributing editor of Astronomy magazine. Sheldon and his wife Marilyn Holloway-Reynolds observed the annular eclipse Sunday at a pretty cool place — the Allen Telescope Array northeast of San Francisco. And they had some pretty special friends to hang out with, too, including Jill Tarter of the SETI Institute. I’ll let Sheldon speak for himself as he shares some cool photos with you.
“First, let me say for my wife, Marilyn, and I, hanging out at the Paul Allen Array with Jill Tarter and everyone involved with the SETI Institute was an honor beyond words. The work they are doing to answer that billion-light-year question — Are we alone? — makes them true rock stars deserving our support. Being able to witness this eclipse through the variety of scopes that were present was fascinating and informative.
My goal was to capture the moment for all who were not able to see it, so I brought my Canon 10D and a Canon 100-400mm lens. I had a filter so I could avoid never seeing another eclipse! Ha! I shot every exposure time I could. My wife and I kept adjusting the tripod and camera settings like a pro racecar team. So, thanks to intelligent designed grace, we got what you see. The only sad part was that E.T. didn’t call the array while we were there. But with hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy alone, I’m sure that call will come!”
