Oceanside Photo & Telescope (OPT) is calling for volunteers in the San Diego, California, area to help with astronomy outreach at this year’s San Diego County Fair. The fair’s 2012 theme will be “Out of this World” and will feature many space- and astronomy-related events. Craig Weatherwax, Penny Distasio, and the folks at OPT are looking for volunteers to bring telescopes and to hang out to talk astronomy with the masses of people who attend the fair. The fair generally attracts 400,000 to 500,000 people between early June and early July. This year’s fair takes place June 8–July 4 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds just north of Del Mar.

Astronomy club members from Southern California are encouraged to participate in this worthwhile outreach event, a great opportunity to spread knowledge about the universe to many who may never have seen or looked through a telescope. Entry to the fair will be provided to volunteers, and any equipment brought can be securely stored overnight.

OPT is looking for volunteers for the following dates: June 8–10, June 12–14, June 15–17, June 19–21, June 26–28, June 29–July 1, and July 2–4.

For more information and to volunteer for the fair, please contact Penny Distasio at penny@optcorp.com.
