With just over a week until the deadline for Astronomy magazine’s 2011 Out-of-this-world Award, I wanted to make sure everyone knows about this great opportunity.
If you’re part of a nonprofit group anywhere in the world that works to show off the wonders of astronomy to the public, you’re eligible for this $2,500 award. All materials must be postmarked by January 20, so don’t delay. Simply fill out an application form and write two short essays, one about what outreach projects your group’s put on (500 word limit) and the other about what you’d do with the prize money (250 word limit). You’re also free to submit other materials to give us a sense of your group and what it’s done (things like flyers, photos, and media clips). I’m sure there are still organizations out there that are interested in this prize and simply haven’t applied yet — but you can’t wait too much longer!
More details and the official application form are available at www.astronomy.com/award, and if you have any questions, you can send them to me via email (bandrews@astronomy.com) or in the comments below. We’ll announce the winner March 1, so until then, good luck!

Hi AWAW,
I'll send you an email too, for a more detailed response (and in case you don't check this blog entry obsessively for my answer), but I wanted to let you and everyone else know that submitting everything via email is perfectly fine.
As long as we get your application form and your two essays in some way, you're in.
Thank you for promoting astronomy, and it's our pleasure to be able to help!
I'm not an astronomer or even a star gazer, except when I happen to look up. I live in SC and happened to look up tonight. I saw a comet. Moving east to west. Naked eye. Not a shooting star. It was moving fast, horizontally, but had the same sort of a tail. I remember Haley's comet and this was the same except much smaller and much faster. Sorry I sort of hacked into this site and commented on the first blog I could get into, but it felt like it was important.
HI BILL,
FIRST OF ALL THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE VIA YOUR BLOG FOR MY QUESTION.
I'M SENDING YOU OVER MY APPLICATION AND THE DETAILS OF THE ORGANISATION (OFS) AND THE SUPPLEMENTS WHICH YOU WERE REQUESTING FOR.
HOPE AND PRAY THAT YOU WILL LIKE IT.
KEEP UP THE AMAIZING WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING AND I LOVE TO BE A PART OF IT IN ANY WHICH WAY I CAN.
BILL ITS A PLEASURE TO BE IN TOUCH.
THNAKING YOU.

Is there anyway you would still accept an application? I have only just found out about this, and this amount of money would make the Sheffield Astronomical Society's plan for an observing centre possible: www.youtube.com/watch
