Observers have known about Mercury's existence since antiquity, but it's difficult to study because of its position in the solar system. In the first installment of the "Tour the solar system" series, Associate Editor Liz Kruesi explores what scientists know about the innermost planet and what they're still hoping to learn in the future. Be sure to check out the Mercury video just posted. It’s the first filmed in our new series called “Tour the solar system.” Over the next few months, you can tune in to watch and listen to Astronomy’s editors discuss our solar system’s biggest and best objects. We’ll cover our star, the planets, and a few other worlds.

In this particular video, I talk about some of the basic properties of Mercury and a few of the MESSENGER spacecraft's discoveries. Our video department did a wonderful job incorporating the images and piecing together the final product.

You can let me know what you think about this first installment in the comments section below, and get excited for the others in the series coming soon!
