It’s almost incredible to see the moon, in under 2 hours, transform from a brilliant full disc, to a smoldering ashen orb lurking among the stars.
This lunar eclipse image is a composite of 15 stills taken with a DSLR on a tripod from my backyard.
By visual observation it doesn’t look as red as in the pictures, but certainly looks more ominous. The redness results from the earth's atmosphere acting as a prism, refracting more of the red rays of the sun onto the moon's surface.
