Also known as the seven sisters (from Greek mythology), the Pleiades are an open star cluster (it contains more than a thousand of them) made up of young, hot, very bright stars that formed about 100 million years ago and are 440 light years away from us. They are surrounded by a complex system of reflection nebulae, the brightest being the one around the star Merope.
