This is an image of NGC4631, also known as the Whale Galaxy. It is a barred spiral galaxy about 30 million light years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. It gets its name from the fact that it resembles a whale. With the smaller elliptical galaxy NGC4627 above it, it looks like a mother whale with her calf.
