Craters Wilhelm, Longomontanus, and Clavius

on Thursday, October 13, 2016

Time to learn some moon craters! I present Wilhelm, Longomontanus and Clavius.
Wilhelm – diameter is just over 100 km, named after Wilhelm IV (Landgrave of Hesse), German astronomer (1532-1592).
Longomontanus – diameter is just over 145 km, named for Christen Sørensen Longomontanus; Danish astronomer and mathematician (1562-1647).
Clavius – diameter is just under 231 km, named for Christopher Klau (Clavius); German mathematician (1537-1612).
For me, Clavius will always be associated with the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. The information above was taken from the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Gazatteer of Planetary Nomenclature that can be accessed at: http://planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov/
Tech Specs: Canon 6D, Meade 12” LX90 telescope, best 300 frames out of 1,500 frames using the software package Registax.
