Messier 109 (also known as NGC 3992) is a barred spiral galaxy approximately 60 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. M109 can be seen southeast of the star Phecda (γ UMa), aka Phad. M109 is the brightest galaxy in the M109 Group, a large group of galaxies located in the constellation Ursa Major that may contain over 50 galaxies.
M109 shines at magnitude 9.80 and its angular size is 7X4 arcminutes or 0.12 degrees. At 60 million light years distance that small angle corresponds to an enormous 120,000 light year diameter.
The three brightest galaxies around M109 are, from left to right, UGC 6969, UGC 6940, and UGC 6923.
