This is a close up view of an interesting region in IC 1848, the Soul Nebula. IC 1848 (Sharpless 2-199, LBN 667) is located in the constellation Cassiopeia, at a distance of about 7000 light-years. The central formation is reminiscent of Thor's Hammer in Bryce Canyon, Utah.
The image uses Ha, SII and OIII filters mapped to the red, green and blue channels respectively. Adjustments to the channel levels creates the blue and gold motif, made popular by the Hubble Imaging Team.
Exposure Details
SII 630 min (21 x 30 min)
Ha 600 min (20 x 30 min)
OIII 630 min ( 27 x 30 min)
Taken with an SBIG STL-11000 camera, using Astrodon filters and an RCOS 12.5" scope
