Starmus set to commence with unprecedented, all-star lineup

On Saturday my wife Lynda and I will fly to Chicago, then to London, and then to Tenerife, in preparation for the third Starmus Festival in the Canary Islands. This unique science festival celebrates stars and music (thus, Starmus), and is the brainchild of good friend Garik Israelian, an astronomer at the Institute for Astronomy in Tenerife.

This year’s Starmus Festival (June 27–July 2, 2016) will pay tribute to the great Stephen Hawking, who is already on the island. The career tribute will include many presentations and talks from Stephen’s friends and associates.

Never before has a scientific gathering like this taken place. Among the many speakers will be Stephen himself, Brian May, Alexei Leonov, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Brian Cox, Martin Rees, Brian Schmidt, Chris Hadfield, Rusty Schweickart, Kip Thorne, Adam Riess, Jill Tarter, Richard Dawkins, Robert Wilson, Roger Penrose, Carolyn Porco, and many many others — including 10 Nobel Prize laureates.

There will be a star party under some of the most spectacularly dark skies on Earth, and round table discussion underneath the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias, the largest telescope on Earth. The Sonic Universe Concert near the Festival’s end will be an incredible highlight, featuring Brian May, Rick Wakeman, Hans Zimmer, Sarah Brightman, and Brian Eno. The amazing Brian Eno will also be the Festival’s keynote speaker.

Stephen Hawking will also award the first round of medals for excellence in science communication, something that will become an event with each successive Starmus.

And there will be many, many more features!

We will also have copies of Starmus: Discovering the Universe, the book of talks and proceedings from the Second Starmus Festival, which was held in 2014. This was a joy to edit, and I can tell you that you will not want to go without a copy!

It’s a pleasure for me to be associated with Starmus. I can tell you there’s nothing at all like it anywhere else on the planet.

I’ll be there sharing the events this year with blogs and observations, and I hope that you will join us for Starmus, either in person or via live streaming (see below).
