About SolarMax

I have been observing the Sun for 35 years. I also design observatories (wrote the book "Building a Roll-Off roof Observatory: A Complete Guide for Design and Construction", Springer 2011). I am presently writing a second edition to this text to include building a dome observatory including all the commercial models of merit available. I enjoy H-alpha imaging and tinkering with programs that manipulate the video images I take. I use a Coronado 60 Solar Max, A Lunt 50 mm, a Lunt 60 mm air compressed tuning scope, and a PST MOD with all but the 60 mm air compressed tuning Lunt which cannot be improved - its quite good enough! The PST was quickly disassembled, the etalon yanked out and placed in the sweet spot of my optical train. I use as Meade 102 ED my favourite refractor, and a Televue 102. I plan to write a third book on H-alpha Solar Astronomy. The old PST serves as a good finder with a solar screen over its objective, and a Meade eyepiece tube screwed into the PST blocker-eyepiece socket which allows normal lenses to focus. The PST blocker-eyepiece for those that are interested, is a good final blocker for a PST MOD telescope but you will have to machine an adapter to fit its awkward thread on the backside of a T-thread accessory. It is, like the Etalon a good little H-alpha blocker albeit only 6 mm. But your image resolution is narrow compared to the field anyway, so you might just as well lose some of it and concentrate on Regions of Interest - thats all PST MODS are good for anyway.
