M78

M78 and NGC 2071 (lower right) are two reflection nebulae in Orion, very well known to visual observers. They are located on the edge of a huge cloud of molecular hydrogen that is largely dark in the visual spectrum. But professional infra-red studies show these areas of dust and gas host numerous newly formed star systems. These images were taken on 10/8 and 11/1-11/3/2013 from a dark sky site near Anza, CA. I used a 12.5" PlaneWave CDK telescope and a QSI-640ws camera at f/5.2. The total integration time was about 7 hours using LRGB filters.
