The Trifid name means "divided into 3 lobes," and is about 5000 ly away. "The object is an unusual combination of an open cluster of stars; an emission nebula (the lower, red portion), a reflection nebula (the upper, blue portion) and a dark nebula (the apparent 'gaps' within the emission nebula that cause the Trifid appearance; these are also designated Barnard 85)." Imaged August 4, 2013, from Long Island, New York. This image a combined 14x180sec ISO 1000, Canon 60Da. Taken through an Orion ED 80 with a WO flat Field Focal Reducer 0.8x, piggybacked on a Meade LX200 GPS, and guided PhD Guiding soft and Orion Autoguider. Processed PhotoShop CS6.
