The "Fruit Moon" comes from American folklore to signify the time when ripe apples fall from trees. The September full moon is often called the "Harvest Moon". This name comes from farmers who used the bright moonlight to continue harvesting past sunset. In 2009, this is not the case, as the "Harvest Moon" is defined as the full moon that occurs closest to the Autumnal Equinox. In this case, the "Harvest Moon" will occur on October 4th. Therefore, this year's September full moon is the "Fruit Moon".
