Total Solar Eclipse seen from upper deck of the Cruiser near Iwo Jima Island

by Marta and Michal Zolnowski

This is combination of two images taken during Total Solar Eclipse 2009 on the board of the ship in neighborhood of Iwo Jima Island. The apparent size of the Sun was significally smaller than angular size of the Moon. Additionally Solar Corona was weak because of minimal activity of the Sun. Due to this two facts was easier than during other Total Eclipses to register on the surface of the Moon gray Earthshine reflected from the Earth.
On upper image is visible weak solar corona and Earthshine of the Moon. On the surface of the Moon is possible to see even big Copernicus Crater. Lower image was taken at the same time when a few hundred people on the upper deck of the ship was watching and taking picture of this stunning event.

Upper iImage was taken using SBIG STL 11000M and 180mm Nikkor Lens. Exposure time: 20ms. Lower using Canon 40D and 18-200 IS Lens.

Like your photo a lot. I think you were lucky to get a good shot from a ship at sea. Cheers, Aadil.
