maybe i'm just not using the LPI to it's fullest potential, but i can never get great results with it.  (i got a really bad mars with it last time i tried!)

anyhow, i thought i'd give saturn a go tonight.  i've imaged saturn a couple of times before; the LPI actually did pretty good.  the seeing was average, and i seem to be having dificulty determining best focus (magic eye!?! where's the magic?) 

it is my best saturn so far, so i can't talk too badly about it.  this one is 100 images through my 8" F/10. 

Q:  would another 100 have made much difference?

That's pretty much the same way I get Saturn with about 6 images stacked. (No motor drive). Just my pic is alittle larger...

I don't think another 100 exposures would have made a difference. The LPI is pretty much touch-n-go with how the images come out. The pic looks good (detail wise). I would probably recommend a barlow in the 3x range to increase image size.

For the planets, best results are obtained with the combination with a long focal length scope, a 3x [or more powerful] barlow, and a webcam with a fairly high built in magnification.   A video clip of about 60 seconds at 10 fps isn't too much.   So, you want large scale.....up close and personal.

The rest comes from the processing.  I think Registax 4 [free] is awfully hard to beat for aligning, stacking and wavelet processing.   It can really do wonders with a mediocre video clip.

There is nothing wrong with your image that a little more scale wouldn't improve.   Focus is of course very important, but "seeing" is probably THE most important.   If the seeing isn't average or better, wait for another night.
