    Row of prominences

    Hi Folks

    This line of prominences appeared on the Sun on Nov 3. Measuring approximately 360,000km along the disc with the tallest plume 51,000km high. Also visible were 2 quite 3D looking filaments, the right hand one projected into the edge prominence. Earth added for scale. Taken near Birr Ireland.

    Modified PST at f/20; DMK21 camera;

    Ditto! That is amazing detail! What mods were done to your PST?

    How have you had a chance to take a picture of the Sun?
    Ireland's and the UK's weather has been crap recently.

    Thanx Folks.

    The mod isnt to be taken into lightly as it involves hacking both  a perfectly good PST and refractor. it is basically using the PST box connected onto a Celestron C100ED refractor with a 90mm Baader D-ERF (enrgy rejection filter) over the objective. google PST mod for more details.

     Yeah at this time of the year you nearly have to camp out and wait for the sucker holes!

    Dave, This is a most impressive image! I have also purchased a (Daystar) Energy Rejection Filter for the purpose of pursuing a PST mod as well. Did you use an older or newer version of the PST? It seems that Meade learned of people modifying their PST units and started to use much stronger glue for one of the key components within the PST. By the way, what is the effective focal length of your current system involving the modified PST? Anthony.

    Hi Anthony good to talk to you again.

    Mine is about 3 years old. It was tough to remove the tube even on this vintage. FL is the same as the C100ED = 910mm. Most important thing is to get a large f/ scope eg at least f/8 but preferably f/10. Am hoping to sell this system next year to make a version with a 152mm f/8 achromat!

    Dave, Thanks for the info. When the time comes to sell the modified PST, please let me know. I am studying the acquisition of a TMB 203mm 1200mm refractor which is available. However, its f-ratio (f6) would seem to be too fast for such a modification. I will send private email since h-alpha imaging of the sun is something I would like to get back into after a long hiatus. Anthony.

    Anthony

    feel free to email anytime, in fact just did a talk today (sat) on very same subject. f/6 far too short for this mod alright.
