That's an excellent website, Leo.  Thanks for sharing it.  I went to one of the movie's fake sites and to thier credit, I suppose, it says right at the top of the home page (in rather small print) "A Part of the 2012 Experience".

I am glad you guys like the site.  It is high time that there was something out there that wasn't based on greed, fear, and ignorance in respect to all this doomsday drivel.

Of course, that is just the humble opinion of this rather small speck of a meat bag in a very large universe.

A fellow showed up to a local star party I was at this summer and insisted that "Kennedy was killed because the Apollo Astronauts met aliens on the Moon who told us about the 2012 doomsday and what we can do to save ourselves. But there are evil aliens that live in the south of the moon (the frist ones were from the north) and they had Kennedy shot by a cloked alien from the grassy-lawn-place with a percision laser rifle designed to look like one of our guns. They want the earth destroyed because it was blocking their view of some star far out in the cosmos."

I have been getting hammered hard by folks that unfortunately truly believe that something is going to happen, I have been getting tired trying to explain this kind of dooms day nonsense away.

I too have this site marked in my favorites and will not hesitate to send it next time I hae an inquiry along those lines.  I might also print out some copies next time I am out with the telescope.

Just to make matters worse, I just saw another new ad for another 2012 episode, It's amazing what folks will do just to make a buck.

I wish we could sue these people when the day comes and goes just like any other date.

Hmm, maybe some little bit of good may come of this.  We all should set a little away and prepare for emegency situations.  I myself live in earthquake country so I do keep a cache of edibles and water in a crush proof container in my flat and also a small backback with water, food, comfortable shoes, and a first aid kit in my car.  Doesn't hurt to be prepared for a natural disaster be it flood, quake, or tornado.  And by the way, some canned goods that don't require cooking work just as well as the freeze dried staff and are lots cheaper.

Of course as Oliver said survival freeze dried specialized survival vittles will do little good if the world is coming to an end!  I guess one could sit atop the largest rubble pile and enjoy the pouch water and the MRI as they waited for the ground, water, or whatever swallow them up.

Boy, if you guys weren't regular members and legit astronomers, I'm sure this thread would have been locked by now.  I probably won't be seeing the movie.  I'm too scientifically-oriented to suspend my disbelief.  I'll watch a sporting event instead and save the price of a movie ticket.

I am not a legit astronomer, it is a hobby for me that I thoroughly enjoy.

We know the movie is not real but it should have some enjoyment value to see the fx involved.

Did you go see the latest Star Trek movie? I thought it was one of the best, but I know it wasn't real.

Want to know the most hilarious thing about all of this 2012 hooplah? If the world does come to an end we are going to have a lot of egg on our face, or would that be rocks and lava. Oh well.

There are those who think that Dec 21st, 2012 will bring a positive, transformative change.  Like "Oprah" being cancelled, or the Cubs winning the World Series . . . na . . . I think the end of the world will happen first.

I watched the 6 minute long trailer for 2012 on Comcast On Demand yesterday, along with all of the many video blogs by Charlie Frost, played by a very humorous Woody Harrelson.  The trailer was an exercise in over-the-top CGI special effects and in no way made me desire to see the upcoming movie.  However, the Charlie Frost segments actually contained some legitimate information on various end-of-the-world disaster scenarios and were quite entertaining.

Make mine a beer and a bratwurst.  Since it will all be over my doctor need not ever know.

As for why this 2012 thread had avoided the dreaded hook of doom I think it has very little to my alleged legitimacy and more to do with the fact that none of us here has any ax to grind, no hatchet to bury, no manifesto to promote, other than giving out some good information while taking ourselves none too seriously.
