French City Says Goodbye to Light Pollution

Hooray for Toulouse as they decide the night sky is a treasure worth preserving:

Ravening clouds shall not long be victorious, They shall not long possess the sky, they devour the stars only in apparition, Jupiter shall emerge, be patient, watch again another night, the Pleiades shall emerge, They are immortal, all those stars both silvery and golden shall shine out again, The great stars and the little ones shall shine out again, they endure, The vast immortal suns and the long-enduring pensive moons shall again shine. It's not the same but it's a step in the right direction, U.S. Physicians are now fighting light pollution also. http://www.skyandtelescope.com/news/home/48814012.html

Great link Tkerr.   This line sums it up well for the AMA:

Finally, many species (including humans) need darkness to survive and thrive.

Perhaps now people will start to reclaim the night from lazy politicians and rapacious power companies.

That would be lovely. I saw something on TV one night, an ad maybe? that incidentally showed a "world at night" map and it was pretty appalling the amount of light on that. I'm just happy that my neighborhood is MUCH darker than my old one. The stars were really pretty when I was sleepless at 2 a.m. today.

I'm figuring out LinkedIn! Do they have addictive games like Facebook? ;-)
