Registax will do it well, and it's freeware.

There are multiple download sites in different parts of the world, so Google it to find the appropriate one to use.

    It's called stacking.

For lunar and planetary image stacking registax is the program you need.

If you're stacking video frames you will need to make sure the video is saved as AVI. If it is not and is saved as MOV you will need another program to convert that into an AVI for Registax to use.   Virtual Dub is a good program for that.

Jeff,  have you tried Registax 5 yet?

    Tim:

Not exactly. I downloaded and installed it on an older laptop that died about a week later. I loaded an older AVI file into it so I could see what's changed in the menu structures, but I only fiddled with it for about an hour. Then the older laptop died.

When I upgraded, I moved to Vista, not realizing there is a large difference in driver compatibilities between the "standard" version and the 64-bit version. It registered only dimly on me at purchase time that I was getting the 64-bit version. So, now I have the problem of finding the right drivers for my different cameras to get them working on the new system. At the same time I acquired a new scope and have been going through that learning curve.

Couple that with the crummy weather we've had for the past two months, and you come up with zero productivity for me recently, image-wise.

    Sigh.

So, I haven't yet installed R5 on the new system. I have verified that R4 works, however, so I *suspect* R5 will, too. I try to keep up to date on the happenings at the Registax Yahoo Group, and I see that some folks are havnig difficulties ... but it doesn't appear to be any worse in that regard than when R4 was launched and R3 users had to accustom themselves to the changes. My Registax presentations still incorporate both R3 and R4 menus  and methods, so I guess it's time to finally upgrade and go all out on the new version.

First, though, I need to get my webcams and firewirecams adapted to Vista 64. As they say: It's always SOMEthing ...

     Tim

Since I am just a very new beginner I would look for any help I can find especially for R5. Do you have tutorials that would help?

    Thanks

    Roger

If you're just starting out with Registax I'd suggest sticking with ver4 for a while till you get used to using it. Fewer options than ver5 and easier to keep track of where you are and what the various functions do.

    I haven't found a general tutorial for R5 yet.

These folks can be helpful (click here).

Here is a video tutorial for R4.

Here is Eric Roel's R5 solar prominence processing tutorial.

Since the majority of my imaging is Deep Sky Objects I never did get really proficient with Registax, and since the release of Version 5 I've had no opportunity to use it yet. Usually when I get a clear night I photography Deep Sky Objects in which case then I use Nebulosity v2 for stacking my images, Unless I just want to do a quick and dirty stack then I use Deep Sky Stacker which is free and easy to use, but neither of those will work on the moon or planets.
Next chance I get, clear night with the moon,  I'll capture some web cam video and run it through Registax v5.  Besides, I need to see if I am going to have problems with it since I upgraded my computers to 64 bit operating systems.

Any ways, Like John suggested, stick with R4 for now until you get used to that.  You can find some great tutorials and information on the Internet like here and at the Yahoo discussion groups. I believe, somewhere in these forums Jeff has posted a excellent one for stacking and processing the planets and moon with R3 and R4.
