    CG-5 telescope mounting?

What is the best way to mount a telescope to this type of mount. If anyone has any pictures and measurements it would be great. Should I just use a dovetail? I am building two telescopes, one as an autoguider and one as the main larger aperture scope. So I require a mount and I have determined that I could afford the CG-5. I have almost completed the autoguider scope and will be done tomorrow I will post pictures. So is anyone could help that would be great.

    Re: CG-5 telescope mounting?

Do you mean the original CG-5, or the CG-5 ASGT with the larger, all-metal, tubular-leg tripod?

If it's the former, then I wouldn't recommend it. I've tried it. It will frustrate you.

If you mean the latter, then there are other folks here with direct experience with it.

Normally you use a dovetail. Another method with some mounts is to bolt a plate directly to the DEC head of the mount, then bolt rings to that plate. That method is less likely to work loose, but some mounts' DEC heads aren't pre-drilled for this sort of thing. With cast-metal mounts you might also have a problem of not having enough metal (thickness as well as breadth) to hold bolts and/or anchors securely.

If you use lock screws or clamps on a dovetail, it should perform well without slipping.

I don't like the Vixen-style dovetail bars that Celestron uses because they're lightweight and narrow. This makes them more susceptible to flexure. You don't want flexure in a photographic setup. However, many folks have used this system for decades and have produced good results ... so, as long as you don't overload it, you could be okay.

What size telescopes and how much do they along with your camera gear all weigh?

The maximum instrument load capacity of the Celestron ASGT CG5 GT mount is 35 pounds. That's for visual use.  Generally you don't want to use that much weight for photography uses.  It can be done but it creates a lot of work, and your autoguiding software will be working hard.

    |As for the mounting of a telescope to the mount, you will need a Dovetail/mount bar and rings. For small telescopes there is a short saddle plate that comes with the mount. But you will still need to buy the appropriate sized rings to mount the telescope to the saddle plate.

    Re: CG-5 telescope mounting?

I promised I would show you guys the progress on my autoguider refractor. It is a Jaegers 60mm cemented achromatic lens with a focal length of about 40.64cm.This is my first telescope I have ever made. It is not done yet, I want to test it on a celestial target before I complete the scope by adding the final screws that will complete the construction process. Its cloudy out so no cigar. Also, I built most of it out of abs plastic :P.
