    LOL....

    Very Cool topic !!

Ok here's my list in this order, which is pretty much the same as yours:

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951 film)
    Forbidden Planet (1956)
    Red Planet(2000)
    Dune(1984)
The First Men in the Moon(1964)
    The War of the Worlds(1953)
    Aliens
    Alien
    Contact (1997) with Jodi Foster.
Star Wars, all movies, but especially episodes IV, V and VI.
    Star Trek, all movies
    Apollo 13(1995)
    October Sky
    Mission to Mars
    Starship Troopers
    Pitch Black
    Chronicles of Riddick
    Galaxy Quest
    The Fifth Element
    Sunshine

This is the order I like them and not necessarily the order they came out in relation to each other.

Some people didn't like it, but I thought Sunshine was awesome.

Huge oxygen gardens, massive "sun shield", not to mention the scene where the 3 guys launch out of the dead ship back into theirs with the sun looming in the background, very cool for me.

Well the question was "Astronomy Movie" and most posts seem to be sci-fi with astronomy not really being in the storyline.  My favorite "Astronomy Movie" is Contact with Jodie Foster.  It is not my favorite "Space" movie, however.  That would be Armageddon with Bruce Willis.

    Re: Favorite Astronomy Movie

OK, so I've been reading this for a while, and I'm gonna go ahead and add "WALL-E"... b/c the creator(s) included some nice, rather realistic looking shots of constellations, a galaxy or two, some activity on the sun, and a view of earth from space.  My 3-yr old grandson named some of these objects the other day when I was showing him pictures in my Astronomy mags, and when I asked him how he knew what they were, he said "WALL-E".  So, I think that rates putting that movie on the fav astronomy (even-remotely-related) movie" the list.

     Close Encounters

    Space Balls

Star Wars (Empire Strikes Back, by far the best)

    Galaxy Quest

    Space Camp

    The Last Starfighter

    The Black Hole

    Apollo 13

    The Right Stuff

    Space Cowboys

Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy

    I'm sure there are others...

In the beginning there was nothing, and it exploded.

A good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read.

    The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

    Re: Favorite Astronomy Movie

The "ultimate sci-fi fan" would appreciate Star Trek also.

It depends how one defines "astronomy movie" - it can be a narrow or broad definition.

My "non-fiction" choices are Contact, Apollo 13, Deep Impact.

My "sci-fi fantasy" choices include Star Trek, Star Wars, The Last Starfighter, Battle Beyond The Stars, etc., etc.
