    Aquarius

Is anyone noticing how our planets are lining up lately? I've been watching since Venus and Jupiter was along side the crescent moon last month or november. I'm not sure. judy tooley

Yes, if you'll browse the topic areas or do a search on "conjunction" you'll find several reports and even some photos here.

I'm not sure about that. The only line up will be the Earth, Sun and Galatic centre.

That lineup actually occurred in May of 1998.  Hucksters trying to profit from stories of doom have stretched the window to fit into their silly 2012 conjectures.

I’m glad you enjoyed it, Norm.  Myths, legends and fairy tales are always fun to read, especially on winter evenings.  However, it’s a shame the way planetariums, websites, and popular science TV programs cater to public interest in the flimsiest of evidence that there ever was a star of Bethlehem. An alleged star was mentioned briefly by only one of the four gospel writers.  It was particularly common in that era to try to indicate that an event of supposed significance coincided with an astrological portent. Remember, the gospel writers were trying to market a new religion and wanted to provide evidence that may have swayed their contemporaries. Astrology was one of the methods.  Although three of the gospel writers were prudent enough to not take that leap.  Nevertheless, nowadays we have people employing tremendous stretches of the imagination to try to show that some real astronomical event was the star of Bethlehem.

Venus will next appear to approach Jupiter on 2010 FEB 17 at a distance of 32 arcminutes (approximately the width of a Full Moon), but they will be only 9° from the Sun.  The Moon will pass about 5° north of the pair on 2010 FEB 14.  On 2011 MAY 11 those planets will be separated by 34 arcminutes while a more observable 26° from the Sun, but the Moon won’t be in the vicinity.

Venus will appear to pass by Jupiter twice in 2012 on MAR 13 and JUL 01, but at distances of 3.0° and 4.8°.  The Moon will not appear nearby to them on those dates.

Normally such Venus-Jupiter conjunctions are separated by roughly 13 months, but occasionally there can be multiple passages over a short period of time due to apparent retrograde motions.

Thanks for clearing that up Curt.
