Hello, I'm just joining this thread. I've been an amateur astronomer all my life, but drifted away from it in recent years. Well, my six year old daughter is showing a real passion for astronomy, so it's rekindled my old passions. We'll be looking forward to reading all the great input for the members of this site.

Hello and thank you for allowing me to be part of this great site. My name is Cynthia and I live in Wisconsin. I'm 36 yrs old and I've been facsinated by the wonders of Astronomy since I was a little girl, yet I know very little about it. My son, who is 7 years old, is now learning all about the constellations and our solar system at school. He has so many questions but mostly he enjoys telling me what he's learned. I decided to do a little searching online and found this wonderful forum. I love the fact that you have 'Astronomy for Kids' and we are both very excited to continue to learn as much as we can.

    Thank you again,

    Cynthia & Son

Hello from the mountains of northeast Washington!

My 3 grown sons presented me with a new Celestron Nexstar 8SE for my 60th birthday.  I was pretty overwelmed.  I have never owned a telescope but I am familiar with the night sky.  I have visited planetariums a number of times with my sons when they were young as part of their education.  I enjoy the night sky and I live where the night view is uncontaminated by artificial light.  I have used the new scope at night but only once because it has been too overcast.  I had fun that one night a week ago and learned how to do the alignment and took a tour before the moon came up.  Did look at the moon but figured I better get a filter to tone down the brightness.  That little bit I did look at the moon was wonderful.  The detail was captivating even with the brightness.  I would have stayed out longer that night but for the cold, about 10F.

I am looking forward to learning astronomy and sharing what I learn with my kids and grandkids and this forum will probably play a major part in this experience.  We are already planning several "Science" weekends with the family for this summer.  Our main topics will be Astronomy and Geology.

    Thanks for the welcome!

     Hi all!

I've been a budding astronomer since I was 10 years old (too long to remember  ). I've had a Celestron C8 (orange tube) since the 80's, but life and work have kept me away from my favorite hobby for many years.

Once we moved to a new house in the suburbs with little light pollution, I began to think about astronomy again. To this end, I "shot the moon" and purchased a William Optics FLT 98CF APO and a Losmandy GM 8 mount to further my hobby (but spending this much, I should call it an obsession  ).

I've just subscribed to Astronomy magazine (which I used to read as a teen), and I'm looking forward to participating in this group.

    Mike

Hello all. I found this mag and website from a radio station program called "It's Over Your Head". Just want to say that I enjoy the site and learn something every time I stop by. See you around, eh?

Thank you for the weldome. I look forward to reading and learning about the things that amateur astromonmers can do (I cannot; I lack the funds, and I have dyscalculia and a neurological synsrome, combined with a muscular disease, that makes such work impossible for me. I am grateful to be allowed to live vicariously through other's experiences.

BTW, dyscalculia doesn't mean I don't understand concepts. It means that numbers are chiken scratchings to me. That's why I didn't finish my degree and am only now trying to finish it via Phoenix online. Those who can't do, observe. <g> I read everything I can get my hands on about astronomy other people have done--and the current universal theoriies, translated from math to English for the lay population; that sort of thing. But I'll never be able to do anything but memorize the constellations I see in the sky (knowing the Great Nebula in Orion is one of the "starts" in the sword, that sort of thing) and knowing the planets, etd.

I missed my astonomy subscription, and feel better now that I have it back.

    Thanks,

    Turquoise

Hello.  I'm a nearing 30 woman living in Nova Scotia.  I've always loved all things outer space, but now I want to take that passing interest and make it into a more serious hobby, to go with my ten million other hobbies.  I decided to come here before purchasing a telescope, just to get a better feel for things before plunking down a bunch of money.

    Hi all

    I am from Texas.

I am not a beginner, I started when I was 7 or 8 years old. I am 40 and I still enjoy it.

For about $700.00, through my experience, I would go with the 127mm Mak from Orion. I believe it to be the best all around and a reasonably $ scope for the beginner. Spend as much as you can afford for aperture and save for future eyepieces. If you can, buy a 36mm Baader Hyperion-Aspheric and a 17mm Hyperion eyepieces.(around $120.00 each) For less than a $1000.00, You'll be set for many years of stargazing without the need to upgrade to a better scope.

Hope this will help you in your quest

    G'day all,

Just dusted off the ol' 8" Dobsonian and looking forward to getting back into the world of Astronomy. Been about 4 years since I did serious observing and can't wait.

I live in a small town called Home Hill, situated in Nth Qld, Australia and we have beautiful dark skies about 10 months of the year.

Looking forward to chatting in the forums,

     Rob.

    Greetings all!

I am pleased to join this community, and hope to garner the knowledge, hints and tips that you so readily offer.  I've been "space crazy" since as far back as I can remember, I can still remember the Tom Corbett, Space Ranger series from 1951-52 time period.  I've paid close attention to astronomy for most of that time, but have only gotten into it actively in the past 3-4 years.  I hope to be able to add to the discourse!
