    Messier warriors

Just curious on how many of you out there have found all 110 Messier objects in your scopes.... this is one of my first goals.... also it would help if you could provide some tips or good stories about your conquest.

You may wany to try the Astronomical Leagues Messier Observing Club program.

    www.astroleague.org/al/obsclubs/messier/mess.html

Upon completion of observing all 110 Messier objects you can recieve a certificate and pin. The certificate is suitable for framing if you wish. I completed the program back in 2002 and recieved certificate No.1966.

I also have certificates for the Asteriod Club, Double Star Club, and Lunar Club.

    Good luck and clear skies.

Quite a few have bagged all 110...some have even seen them all in one night. Here's how and when:

I'm an under achiever.  In my two years in the hobby I've bagged just 96 of the Messier objects, a fact about which which my faithfull observing companion, Jessie continually goads me.  My last remaining objects are scattered about the sky and across the seasons so it will be months before I can claim completion.  Many of my observing sessions are planned around increasing my total.  I will pick one, or two Messier objects to search for and then spend the rest of the session exploring that part of the sky, or revisiting old favorites.

    I received Honorary Certificate #1289 in 1995.

My advice is to get to the darkest site you can, with the best southern horizon preferably, for the difficult Messier objects such as M74 and the southerly ones.  You might want to pick up an observing guide too.  If you don't already have a Telrad, get one.

    Re: Messier warriors

Heck I've only been doing this for a couple of months, so I'm nowhere near gettng the 110 found.  Between having little time for observing this time of year and the exceedingly "moist" weather we seem to be having, observing for me is limited, to say the least.  I've probably only bagged a dozen or so.  If anyone has the know-how and ability to come to my place and perform some kind of ritual or speak a few magic words so the clouds will go away, I would most certainly appreciate it!!

I bought some charts that you can use if you have a Telrad.  www.sky-spot.com is where I went to for those.  There's free ones over the internet for the same thing, but the ones I bought seem a little better and have more reference info.  I think the last two websites on DaveMitsky's last post will get you to either of these two resources.

    Re: Messier warriors

I have been viewing for probably 30 years and I must confess, I have still not seen all of the Messier objects. Im sure a lot of the galaxies are missing from my list. Part of my problem is I view from my front yard and the skies are not the best for deep sky viewing. I guess the good news is, I love to get out the scope and have a good time so I m content with what Ive seen but still realize to complete the Messier list would be nice.I wonder, are there a lot of astronomiers like me, who have been viewing for years but have still not seen all the Messier objects? Just to let you know, I have a 6 in orion dob  about 25 years old , a 4 inc go to celestron   1 month old  16x70  and 30x80 binoculars. I can see a 8 inch orion dob in my very near future. Now , that makes me smile.
