What do you think about the 2012 prediction?

I asked this question in another forum that I belong to called Magle International Music.

I would like to know what your opinion is on this subject.

You can do a local search on that topic and find all kinds of opinions. You might also find that it is not a subject many here really wish to discuss.

Just don't read to much into that. The Mayan calender as interpreted by modern man. is that the Mayan calender has prophesied the world will end as we know it on the winter solstice of that year. That doesn't necessarily mean that something catastrophic is going to happen which will end all life. There are events which have taken place throughout the history of this planet and mankind that have had such profound influences that causes change.  And here we are.
That is how some people interpret it, however, they only came to that conclusion because the calendar just simply ends on that date. Why? No one can say for sure, everything is nothing more than conjecture.
Every calendar I have ever had ends on December 31st.  But come January 1st of each new year we are still here.

If you're referring to the Mayan "prediction"...

First, you must consider a few things:

    1.  Modern man isn't really able to fully understand what the Mayans might have meant.

    2.  Much of the Mayan works that could shed light on the subject were destroyed.

    3.  From what we know, the Mayans held a lot of stock in cycles.  The long count calendar (and all their shorter ones) were circular.  Meaning, more than likely, the long calendar will start back at day 1 (or the Mayan equivilant).

I personally, am going to live my life as though life will continue.  I'd rather be prepared to continue paying my bills, saving for retirement and continuing education for my children, and collecting a lot of astronomy stuff.

Will we all die? Probably not, in my opinion.

Will something happen to change life as we know it?  Quite possibly.  Hopefully, it'll be change for the good, but even if it's not, I am pretty sure man kind, and life on Earth, will continue.

It is certain that the "end" came for the Mayans long before their calendar ran out of dates. Nostrodamus predicted some sort of end for 2011 or 2012. Maybe, if we are lucky this will be the end of high gas prices. Better yet it will be the start of using solar energy for everything.

Prophesy started out in this world as an agricultural aide by observation of the heavens. Religion and superstition turned it into a harmful tool.

I predict the Earth and us will survive until the next big collision which will happen before the Sun runs out of fuel. This won't happen until another 140 million years when we reach the galactic asteroid belt (the same one that killed Barney). Anyone scared? Don't be. It is just a SWAG.

    Cheers,

Re: What do you think about the 2012 prediction?

Judy - I, like many others in the world, don't think there is much to all the hype 2012 has developed in recent years. When our somewhat "modern"calendars were changed in recent history, nothing happened worth worrying about (except a couple of weeks missing in the 1700s calendar change, which must have upset a few with their birthdays during the period of "missing days").

I remember when I was in elementary school, some self-appointed "prophets" claimed the world was to end on certain dates/times. My teacher let us outside to show us that nothing was going to happen since we appeared to be a bit frightened from all the talk about going around on the dates/time in question.

Since then, several more disasters have been predicted (rouge planets, comet impacts, etc.) but none have occurred, yet. . So like others, I take all the hype with a big , knowing that some day, we will all pass away from our worldly bodies, which won't be from any hyped-up predictions about the end of the world. Keep , life is too short as it is to be wasted on such matters. Mr Q

I think we've had enough discussion regarding this topic for a while. Anyone wishing to read responses in regards to 2012 can search the community for the other threads. I'm locking this thread to thwart the repeated replies we've already seen in other threads.
