I just bought a Nikon D40 for my wife and I to use. It doesn't look very easy to do afocal with this camera. Is it possible to do this with a DSLR? I've been using a point and shoot camera and now I'm learning my DSLR. Any hints or suggestions?

Sure it is!  All you will need is a camera adapter/mount that mounts the camera to and above the eyepiece.  
You will probably want something a little heftier than Orion's SteadyPix, probably something more like the one I have which is heavy duty and has an extension plate so you can use it with a DSLR that has a longer lens attached to it.

 As Tim said, it is possible. Another thing you may want to get would be the remote (about $15.00)  to trigger the camera. Just pushing the shutter release can cause vibration. The D-40 does have a delay mode for taking the picture either 2 or 10 seconds after the button is pushed. The one problem with the delay is you need to set it every time you take a picture. With the remote you turn the remote feature on in the camera and it will stay on for up to 15 minutes after the last shutter trigger. You would need to set the time it  for it to stay on (2 minutes is default I believe).I believe Afocal would be easier with the D40 as the focus can be set to manual and it is a lot easier to manually  focus than most point and shoot. I never tried with my D-40 as I jumped straight to Prime focus with it.
