    Mars Rover Missions

Can anyone tell me why there are no images of the sun  from the rovers on mars? You would think that would be up there in the top 20 photos taken. A martain sunrise or sunset would be worth seeing . I havent seen any photos of this .

    Re: Mars Rover Missions

    Hi Ovrkll09 :

After doing a little digging, I found a couple of cool shots taken of the Sun and Earth from Mars of by the rovers. Still on the subject of Mars, but taken by an orbiting spacecraft is what I think should be the benchmark of all crafts sent to other planets. It shows Mars with the Milky Way as the backdrop. I'd love to see Cassini take some of Saturn, Messenger of Mercury and how come no one thought of doing this with Earth with the cameras from the Space Station, Shuttle, or orbiting satillites?

Power limitations require most observations be done with plenty of sunlight to recharge the batteries using the solar cells.  Very few observations were made at twilight, some at night, but only when batteries were fully capable of holding a charge and the expectation of recharging next day was high.

Take a look at almost any of the raw image galleries from the navigation and panoramic cameras.  You will see tau measurement images that typically take images of the Sun to determine atmospheric opacity.  Thus, there are hundreds if not thousands of these raw images of the Sun.  As far as what we are used to--"press release" images--there are still quite a few of these images as you have seen in previous posts.
