Page Return Annoyance

This is something that has annoyed me since the last major revision of the forum but I had decided to live with it instead of complain. Well, it's raining and I'm bored so I figured I would bring it up.

When returning to a previous page, the location on the page you return to is not restored. In other words, if you were 20 topics down on the list when you clicked to read the posts in that topic, upon returning to the list of topics you return to the top of the page rather than to the location from where you detoured.

Then, again, maybe it's just me or my setup.

Inbox issues?

"There are either no posts or due to a filter there are no posts to display."

As some may have noticed the site has been attacked by Game spammers today. Do Not Reply to them and definitely Do Not Click the links. You never know what awaits your computer on the other end of those links. Some of them kick off Malware Warnings. The only link you want to click is the one at the bottom of those posts that says "Report abuse".

when I log on I get diverted to Kalmbach Publishing

For the past 2 days or so, when logging on to this website, I get sent to the above website login screen. Logging on there (same user and password) gets me to Kalmbach. After several tries, I eventually get here. What's the problem?

Just like there is for posting (hot linking) images into the body of a message post using the IMG and /IMG tags(BBCodes) there is one in use on other forums for placing(hot linking) Videos into a message body. Would be nice if we could use that code here.

The code / tag is as follows:
[media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nWhnXM-tTI[/media]

It would place a small video window in the body of the message allowing a person to watch the video on the small screen in the message body by clicking the play button >, or clicking on the video window to open a larger window and viewing the full size version much like the option we have now for viewing images. It wouldn't require any more space on the a.com server since the video is stored and hosted elsewhere just like our photos are.

Back Button not working

In one thread post when I click the "Back" button or right click for the drop down menu then click "Back" it doesn't go back to the previous page, instead it just reloads the same page.

That was the only one, so far that I am aware of, that does that.

No! I am not using Microsoft Windows IE. That is too slow on this site.

Unable to embed images to my post

Gurus,

I took some nice pictures of Jupiter and its Galilean satellites that I wanted to post in the forum. When I try to embed the image using the 'Insert / edit' button in the toolbar, nothing seems to happen. It basically places the image description in the post, rather than the image itself.

Is there any step I am missing. Is there any user guide like thing that I could reference in order to accomplish. I do not understand other parameters like image size, orientation like Middle, Absolute Middle, Border... etc.. what should the typical values be. I am kind of appearing like a noob on this forum, and need a little of your valuable help.

Trouble accessing

Bug issues, Is your virus protection good enough?

Earlier this evening my browser did an automatic shut down and my firewall went to work preventing a data execution intrusion. Just a few days ago my virus protection went nuts alerting me to multiple attempted intrusions. Each time while logged on to these forums. The nice thing is that my firewall detected the IP addresses.

Make sure your firewall protection is adequate and your virus protection is maintained up to date.

Deleting our own posts

There was a time when members could delete their own messages anytime they wanted. That was of course if there was not replies to that post. But I've been seeing posts by people with no replies where they only had the option to edit and remove the text leaving an empty post in place. This tells me that the delete icon is only there for a specified time limit after a person has posted a message. IMHO that is stupid! It would be nice to have the ability to delete our own posts anytime rather than leaving an empty post in place cluttering the forums unnecessarily.

On edit:

The Icon is only there for a very short time. I can understand not deleting posts that have replies attached to them. You wouldn't want a bunch of orphaned message replies, but this time limit isn't really necessary is it?

Astro-photography forum Addition

I've been seeing discussions on mounts and telescopes that do not really fit into any of the equipment discussion forum areas as much as they would with Astro Imaging. Maybe it's just me, but am I the only one that can see equipment issues for observation and for astrophotography are not exactly the same? Obviously Not! I see people are posting mount and telescope questions within any of the Astro Imaging forums. They have used the "Your Astrophotos" forum for some of these discussions. Now if you ask me, the title of that topic area is self explanatory, It is for posting your Astrophotos to share with other members. Just like the topic description below the title states.

Just like the most recent discussion I have seen questions on mounts and telescope posted within the "Digital Cameras" or "CCD Camera" forums. Again, as I see it, these topic titles are also self explanatory as to what should or shouldn't be posted within them. There is a huge difference between a little camera and a big ole telescope and mount.

Unfortunately there is no home for these questions / discussions. So, some time back while I was still a moderator of these forums I suggested to the administration to add a new forum topic within the Astro imaging area. This would be an area to discuss issues of and with the equipment used specifically for astrophotography, such as the mounts and telescopes. (I guess that made it into file 13 / the circular file).

Astronomy.com Incompatibilities

I've been trying out other web browsers, most recently Apples Safari. It's a nice browser and is faster than Windows IE and any of the Mozilla browsers. For reasons unknown to me, of all the web sites I use there seem to be compatibility problems with astronomy.com and/or its community server software. Every now and then It does some seriously squirrelly things when loading the pages. Everything will be way out of place crammed to one side or just completely mixed up. Thankfully it doesn't do that all the time. The biggest issue is something I should have known since many Apple / Mac users have complained about it in the past. The Text editor does not have the tool bar available as it does with IE or Mozilla browsers. There are a lot of things needed at times in that tool bar which are not available to Apple / Mac users or users of Safari by Apple even when used on a Windows operating system. The Text editors doesn't read the enter / return key when trying to space your paragraphs. You can hit the enter key as many times as you want and when you post all the text will be crammed into a single paragraph. I haven't even tried everything on this site yet, I fear what might happen if I do. Fortunately I spend more time at other forums and sites that do not have any compatibility issues, therefore as of this moment I do not plan to change my system set up just to conform to the software problems of one site. This leaves open the question, How many other prospective members or magazine subscribers have abandoned astronomy.com because of this or similar compatibility issues?

Am I missing something....

Good day all!

When I get to the forums, I generally do a click on the "Not read button" to see what I've missed. But there is no way to possibly read every topic/discussion on the forum to get to the end(everything is read). I've looked all over the place, but I think I'm missing something simple...Is there a "Mark forum read" button somewhere?

Was also wanting to know something else. As a subscriber to the site, why do we still see the advertisements on the right side of the screen? Seems the links on the side could be spread across the top allowing for the forum 'read' area to be expanded.

This is weird, but I've received a couple emails that supposedly are messages posted to threads I'm subscribed to, by "cocosan". Embedded within the messages are links to some kind of escort service. Fortunatly for me I'm nowhere near new york :p

Are these message actually making it onto the board and being deleted? If so, someone needs to hit "cocosan" with a ban stick or some kind of anti-viral

It's taking forever for a page to load, and yes it's only astronomy.com. I know for certain it's not my machine or my provider, checked by logging onto other forums and web sites, even facebook which I consider very slow is moving a lightspeed compared to this one is today.

I click the icon go out to get a cup of coffee come back and the page is still only loaded about half way.
Is someone doing something in the background that would be bringing things to a near halt?

I would like your input on the story put out by the former CNN science reporter concerning the telescope at the south pole and the dwarf brown star with 5 moons that is in a 3600 year orbit around the sun. Is this a 2012 hoax ? I have heard two stories, the first is that this star will combine with our sun to create a binary sun, second that when this star get close to the sun it will cause different solar disturbances and destroy civilization and the only place to survive is the south pole.
