Did I just see a falling star turn green?

First let me mention..I have absolutely no knowledge of this subject, and I don't by any means think that I saw a ufo or anything like that, but, I was looking out my window, there is a large field across the street from my house.  I noticed a falling star that lasted longer than the average falling star.  Usually when I see them...I go to focus on them, and they are gone.  This time, I actually got to stand there for a second and take it in.  It was a bright falling star, and as it came down, there was a tail, and in those few seconds, I thought it was never going to burn out!  Then...i swear Im not crazy, but, it turned green just before it went out...not just "maybe green" it was GREEN!  Why would that happen?  Also, it seemed like it got closer to the horizon before it finally burned out.  The things that got me are how bright it was, how long it lasted, how low it was before it burned out (i was half expecting to see an explosion of where it landed for a second!), and the green!  It went down at an angle, just like I would expect.  It didnt hover or do any tricks...except the whole green thing! Why would that happen?

It is quite possible for it to display a green color. It just depends on its chemical make up. If it had a lot of nickle and iron in it you could expect a green color. Also it could have just been skimming across our upper atmosphere giving it the appearance and duration that it looked like it was going down at an angle. Some more information.

Quite a few of the bright fireballs that I've seen over the years have been green.

A number of sightings of green meteors are posted at http://tomsastroblog.com/?p=938

Thank you for your answers.  I just thought that was really interesting.  It was very pretty.  I tried to do a quick search online about "green falling stars" and kept getting people talking about them twirling around and slowing down in mid-air, and all kinds of things!  I knew I was looking at the wrong answers! So, thank you. It was so bright, it caught my eye, and I was able to enjoy it for a second, and it did that "green" trick. It just makes me want to pay more attention to the night sky sometime.  Thanks again.

It may have been an early memeber of the Taurid metor shower which will peak between Nov. 5th and the 12th.  The Taurid shower is known for its slow moving fireballs.  More about the Taurids can be found here:

I saw a real nice one this morning as I was driving in to work. I was driving east and it came down brite and low to the horizon. No green color but a fast red streak.

I too have seen bright green fireballs and/or tinted trails over the years.  They are not too common but happen enough to still surprise one with how pretty they are.

Space is not remote at all. It is only an hours drive away if your car could go straight upwards.

seems like most 'falling stars' are usually seen or being aware of in our 'atmosphere'.

isnt that a little too close for comfort?
