Generally, yes: a club star party is an event that is open to anyone. But clubs differ, so contact them to be sure. If the event is happening at a public park, it's likely free and open to anyone.

Normally such an event is just as you describe. Members bring their telescopes and let the public look at whatever they're showing. Sometimes these events are more organized, with each scope having a specific set of assigned objects. And sometimes there are handouts or presentations to provide a learning experience.

Check with the club beforehand to be sure.

I felt the same way and had the same questions when I went to my first star party. Chances are...there will be other people there who don't even have scopes and would likely want to view through yours. So, don't have any concerns about being a non-club member. If anything, you'll be helping the club out by promoting astronomy. With an extra scope to view through (yours), more ppl can view at any one time.

I don't belong to any astronomy club (nor have I ever)...mainly because I can not commit. I just like showing up and offering the use of my scope whenever they are having a star watch close by.

    Have fun.

No problem. When you see how many scopes are there, you will want to get involved. After all, that's why people are there in the first place. It's not like people who are uninterested are going to drive to a star party...
