    Sunlight or Moonlight

Hi chipdatajeffB, Thank you for that. The fact that the Moon is a sphere this would mean it should act as a convex mirror, which would reflect a totally different image to what we get. The surface of the moon will absorb Sun-light but Moon-light is a unique product of the Moon that transmits its own unique characteristics. Best wishes,DM

Yes, it does act like a convex mirror (a rough-surfaced one). It forms the image we get. The Moon does not radiate significantly at any wavelengths of its own.

You are aware, are you not, than we can -- and do -- observe it from Lunar orbit and that it exhibits daylight/nighttime on its far side, just as you'd expect from a body reflecting sunlight.

... but Moon-light is a unique product of the Moon that transmits its own unique characteristics.

So, how would you explain it differently?

I think the light is generated just under the surface as a by-product of the slow decay of green cheese in a near vacuum.  Hypoatmosphericlactoluminescence.

    Facetiously yours

That's got to be it! When are you going to present the paper to the IAU?

Course it can only be seen by people with 20:01 vision under Bortle class 15 skies.

The big issue here is the difference between a "POST" and a "REPLY". DM please reply to your posts and not create a new one with the same name.

If the Moon gives off its own light then why can't we see it at new Moon? I guess there are other dimensions in mirrors too if we could only step through the looking glass. Without our eyes the universe would be dark for everyone. Waves(oscillations) between 400 and 700 nm can be seen and we do see light, light sources and reflected light.

Very little of the universe radiates light but what does allows us to see many beautiful things.

    Cheers,

    BQ
