I quite agree,re the rather hostile 'welcome',and the 'downtalking'.
I am not totally surprised about the reaction,i guess,as it IS an astronomy forum.BUT,this is OFF TOPIC,and to lock threads as they have been smacks of FOS infringment.
If some people don't like it,then don't click on it.,simple as.
To chipdaja, the only opinion i recieved was your telling me that it's all nonsense,basically-and you could be right. End of.

Between us, Curt and I answered CuriousAquarian's questions at least four times. If you follow his/her logic, it appears "all" he/she wanted was proof that Nibiru doesn't exist. Our very first answer politely pointed out that this is not how it works. To no avail.

That's a nice thought, but -- again -- that's not how it works.
To chipdaja, the only opinion i recieved was your telling me that it's all nonsense,basically-and you could be right. End of.
And the same is true of my responses to CuriousAquarian. Go back and read those posts if you like. I did not denigrate ("downtalk") him/her. I did -- more than once -- point out the nonsense in the woo arguments "for" Nibiru and calamity in 2012 and the total lack of evidence in support of it.
I did not delete the posts, I simply locked the thread. There are many, many threads about 2012 and Nibiru here. In the future, if someone wants to read about this nonsense, they're welcome to search and read those threads. There is no sense in posting new ones and tying up moderator's time and energy in monitoring them. We have better things to do.

This is a scientific forum. Sorry, that some people were not greeted here with the warm hugs they expected when presenting hypotheses from dubious sources. It is unfortunate that people with no understanding of the scientific method, yet have heard conjectures in which they want to believe because they sound cool (or scary), are then shocked that they are the ones required to provide proof. Their attitude seems to be that someone has told me something is true, and unless you amateur scientists on a laymen’s forum can prove it is not, then it must be true.
The scientific method is what is taught in virtually all college freshman level science courses before the material specific to the subject is introduced. Those who are not acquainted with the methods of science should not be shocked if they run into skepticism when they try to pass along wild ideas. A dose of reality may in the long run be more beneficial than false assurances that what they heard is correct or that the government is in total control of all related information and has formed a giant conspiracy to keep it a secret.
Logicians bring up the notion of the god between the cracks. This refers to the belief that whatever has not yet been resolved by science must be due to a supernatural entity and requires no further explanation. The cracks may also be filled by fairies, ghosts, extraterrestrials, etc., whatever it is in which people want to believe without proof. Science doesn’t work that way. Those who propose a theory must present their evidence and reasoning. Proving that fairies or anything else do not exist is not required of others, although they may point out flaws in the proposer’s method of inquiry. Those with far out ideas have to learn to accept that they must first run a gauntlet of criticism, if they hope to eventually be proven correct.
Yes, some ideas that turned out to be true were originally scoffed at before becoming accepted by the scientific community. But for every one of them, thousands were eventually tossed into the dustbin. The wild imaginings of hucksters who sell books and lectures to credulous woos have never been in the former category. Yet their disciples keep coming to scientific forums for validation, and cringe when subjected to scientific scrutiny. Sorry if that offends.

Curt, You and Jeff have unending patience when trying to deal with subjects like this. I applaud you. The true believers in this super natural, science fiction, totally nonsensical stuff will not be deterred. So, I guess we suffer their posts and try to ignore them.

True believers, yes, are a pain. But, I believe, caution needs to be exercised by all so as not to insult, degrade or disassociate(spelling?) the truly curious just wanting some insight and some questions answered. And, I know, caution is needed there also. Some appear to be only curious when, in fact, they do have an agenda and use their "curiousity" to only open the door.

Excuse me,but i am just as scientifically minded as you...

I am NOT a 'disciple' of CT theories, yet i am open minded and simply wished to pas it by (what i assumed would be) polite persons who may offer their brief -opinion- on the topic.Thats all.YES,i have seen what are termed 'UFOS' (ie not fanciful fairies, extra terrestrials, but objects that defy explantation).YES,they were very real.YES,i am an experieneced amateur astronomer with 25 years of passion and experience of observing the night (and day) sky.YES,i am a keen amateur meteorologist. (all this may be uncomfortable for you to accept it would seem).
I think you have massive preconceptions of human beings who ponder possibilities that supposed 'logically minded' people either ignore,or just plain scoff at.

Just you live in your tiny little box,eh.Just se what i've written to centaur. That will correct you assumptions about me.I am not a 'believer'.But what i do see is that its very uncomfortable for people with your attitude to accept that there are people like me,with equal passiona bout astronomy and science, yet are actually open to possibilities. You know what they are? Possibilities? So,what you call 'sci fi','supernatural' etc may have some truth in them,as such subjects are the sum of thousands of REAL human beings with REAL lives they want to get on with, yet have experienced things that shook their reality. You may scoff, mock all you like, but just remember that you don't really know anything for sure regarding this subject matter-you just think you do ;) ;)

Exactly.I had no agenda whatsoever, personally.I am quite sorry i ever asked this forum a basic question! I think these CT theories do great harm to people. So,by people like me asking questions about it,people will see both sides to the CT-they may come by this forum via a search,...amd not just blindly accept what is on these CT websites.
Cheers

The question was answered, The actions were justified. There is no reason to take a sincere and honest replies out of context. There is no need to discuss it any further.
