    brightness of objects

Could someone provide me a list of the messier objects with the surface brightness and magnitude so I know which objects I'll be able to see?

It would also be a good idea to pick up a decent star chart.

Thank you Dave, for the surface brightness. I've been wondering about it ever since I read another thread you were on. thanks again

    Re: brightness of objects

You're welcome.  The data I had on M49 (8.4 12.7) and M110 (8.1 13.9) got clipped off in the process of transfering it here.  M102 was not included in the original source.  My thanks go to Stephen Saber for posting the figures, although they are from a different source than mine and differ slightly.

Surface brightness data is available in The Deep Sky Field Guide to Uranometria 2000.0  and in The Night Sky Observer's Guide.

Here are two articles on the subject:

    There's a surface brightness calculator at http://www.geekjoy.com/calcs/surfbright.html
