Well, mistakes by the media are in no way limited to astronomy alone.  They bungle everything, mostly because they are programs organized by humans.  If you don't want mistakes, leave it to computers.  It's that simple and that impossible. ;)

What irks me more than the mistakes they make in facts is how the destroy the English language as a whole.  You have no idea how many times I have had to endure the pain of hearing someone say, "If he was..." or, "She wishes she was..."

The fact of the matter is no one ever really gets it straight.

However, I understand the frustration entirely.  As a copy editor for my school newspaper, I spend most of my time catching the mistakes of others, and, though I am very good at what I do, things do slip by.  It's frustrating enough to not catch the mistakes, but then to encounter them on the news or in a local newspaper... -sigh-

    Centaur:

You' weren't supposed to look through the pinhole.  You were supposed to look at the projected image of the Sun on the side of the box opposite the pinhole.  It’s called a camera obscura, and is an excellent method for not hurting your eyes while observing a solar eclipse.

Yes. "I" know that and "you" know that, but the media showed ppl with the boxes on their heads LOOKING through the holes. It was in the Philadelphia Inquirer the next day. Believe me, I remember it quite fondly. Even as a child I thought those people were foolish.

I found another "gem".  According to CBS News the Moon has no gravity.  Last I checked it did have gravity.  Read the ninth paragraph to see what I mean.

I didn't get in on the entire story, but the other night, one of our local T.V. station's news anchors was reporting that water and possible life may have been found on Mars.  The closing statement went something like this, "There's no telling how many other stars in our universe may hold the same possibilities."

We just keep losing planets out of our solar system.  First Pluto and now Mars has been upgraded to a star!

Come on, what did you guys expect? To the ignoramuses that think they are cool, most of the sciences, especially astronomy, are seen as geeky, technical, trivial stuff. They don't give a flying rat's a$$ about getting the facts right. They don't care about any subject that is even remotely intelligent, only American Idol, Britney Spears, and the like.

P.S. Anyone else pi$$ed off that they always talk about astronomy as if it was astrology?

"So tonight Mars is in Gemini. Check your horoscopes!"

Sam and Company, the really sad thing is that most people don't care about the grammatical and usage errors that slip through onto copy that is read or recited on the air.

Then this continues the mistakes made because some (younger, hopefully) listeners might absorb it believing it to be proper.  And, no one wants to be corrected.

In response to the " Zero Gravity" News Page. How does low gravity make it hard to locate things?

In my opinion, its the work of maps that help people find things.

And it mentions the moon landing, saying they couldnt find a crater, how would they find a moon crater on a film set, somewhere in a US desert?

    Moon Landing = Fraud

The next moon landing will be the first attempt, lets hope they get it right.
