    intergalactic cannibalism - news !!

after thorough reading from material got from the internet and books, my first impressions on our     " Milky Way" which was thought to be an average sized galaxy to one that is an "intergalactic cannibal" ( the phrase is kinda ghouly though ) sucking out from the Sagittarus dwarf, which ventured too close to our milky way and is being torn apart silently, with debris stretching 150,000 light years. Makes me proud of our Milky Way.

Another piece of news that I read today was about the arms of the Milky way which are not 4 in number but actually 2. (This was from yahoo ). Any comments on this, cos i dont kno how true this actually is.

You will sow what you reap and our Milky Way Galaxy will pay for its cannabalistic intentions in the future when it is in turn torn apart by the Andromeda Galaxy. There was a recent article in Astronomy about this.

I too read the Yahoo article and the drawing that goes with it is a might confusing.  If the Milky Way is indeed a Barred Spiral, see M109 or NGC 1300 as examples, then it would stand to reason that there would be two main arms rather than four.  This is all cutting edge stuff and I suspect it will be some time before a consensus is reached on the shape our galactic home.

     M109 has more than two:

There is at least three arms here. Then I always thought the Milky Way had five:

Local (Orion), Sagittarius, Perseus, Norma & Carina.
