Hello, I am conducting an astronomical survey here. Your answers are valuable to me as this will be going into a report.Thank you.
1. Do you have a telescope, binoculars, or both?
5 binoculars, 7 telescopes
2. If you have both which one do you use the most?
Almost 50/50, slight edge to the telescopes, probably.
3. How many times do you view celestial objects every month?
Almost every clear night when I'm not working or doing family stuff. Probably average 10 to 12 nights / month.
4. Which celestial object do you view the most?
About 50/50 between the Moon and the Sun.
5. Do you make accessories for your telescope, if possible, or would you rather buy them?
I make them when I can't buy them or can't afford them.
6. What would you reccomend for a beginner? ( accessories, telescope, binoculars )
Pretty broad question. Simplest answer:
- Accessories = Nightwatch, by Terence Dickinson
- Telescope = 6-inch or 8-inch dobsonian reflector
- Binoculars = 10x50 FMC (fully multi-coated)
7. Do you ever have star parties? If so, how often?
Between 3RF and my local club, TAS, 5 monthly, of which I attend about half.
8. Do you belong to a astronomy club?
Yep, Texas Astronomical Society of Dallas (TAS).
9. How often are you on this forum?
Several times daily.
10. When you are on this forum, is it mainly for information, entertainment, or both?
Mostly information.

1. Do you have a telescope, binoculars, or both? Both
2. If you have both, which one do you use the most? A variety of different telescopes
3. How many times do you view celestial objects every month? This is obviously very much weather dependent and is difficult to answer accurately at the moment. This winter has been very bad for me for a variety of reasons but at least I got to see the lunar eclipse. There's also a big difference between doing an allnighter at a dark site and pulling a binocular or telescope out for a few minutes to look at the Moon, a planet, or a current comet. (How about solar observing?) It's only a guess but I'll say about six times a month.
4. Which celestial object do you view the most? DSOs
5. Do you make accessories for your telescope, if possible, or would you rather buy them? I've only made a few accessories over the years and am neutral on the matter.
6. What would you recommend for a beginner (accessories, telescope, binoculars)? It depends upon the situation. If someone wants a telescope to observe the planets and the Moon, telling them to get a binocular first instead is not very helpful advice.
7. Do you ever have star parties? If so, how often? The usual sense of the word is a large, club-sponsored event such as the Winter Star Party in Florida or the Cherry Springs Star Party in Pennsylvania or conventions such as Stellafane in Vermont and Riverside in California. I go observing with friends often but don't consider such observing sessions to be "star parties". The same goes for the public observing events that ASH holds at the Naylor Observatory. (At one time, ASH had regularly scheduled member star parties at our observatory and various local dark sites.) I usually attend at least four major star parties and astronomical conventions a year and have been to 21 different regional and major star parties and conventions throughout the United States and abroad.
8. Do you belong to a astronomy club? Yes, four of them: AELC, ASH, DVAA, RAC
9. How often are you on this forum? Almost daily
10. When you are on this forum, is it mainly for information, entertainment, or both? Both

1. Do you have a telescope, binoculars, or both? Both
2. If you have both which one do you use the most? Both equally
3. How many times do you view celestial objects every month? Depends on how clear it is. In the UK, it's on average five or six times a month, sometimes more, sometimes less.
4. Which celestial object do you view the most? Deep Sky objects
5. Do you make accessories for your telescope, if possible, or would you rather buy them? I buy them
6. What would you reccomend for a beginner? ( accessories, telescope, binoculars ) Binoculars. You can see a lot with binoculars, more than you think, and I'd definitely recommend a good pair, rather than getting a scope straight away. Using binoculars is a good way of both learning the sky and *seeing stuff*.
7. Do you ever have star parties? If so, how often? I have been to several, including the Texas SP. Our local society is having our first star party next weekend.
8. Do you belong to a astronomy club? Yes.
9. How often are you on this forum? Once a week
10. When you are on this forum, is it mainly for information, entertainment, or both? Both
