Ok,
So this is how it stands at the moment.

2:Saturn - Rhea 2 Votes
3: Saturn - Titan 1 Vote
Saturn - Enceladus 1 Vote
Jupiter - Europa 1 Vote
Saturn - Iapetus 1 Vote
Jupiter - Io 1 Vote

Please keep your votes coming in, I would like to publish the findings on my website if this generates enough interest.
Thanks.

Hi Balrog,
Sorry to intrude on your calculations but I believe that there are three votes for our Moon as the favorite. The three being myself, Zachsdad, & Doberman. BTW, Doberman and I both share the secondary choice of Charon. I could be all wet on this, its pouring rain here and will be till next Tuesday, but I thought I would just let you know.
Respectfully,
Leo

I like several of the ones listed so far.
One moon I find interesting that has not been mentioned is Miranda. This small moon around Uranus displays a complex geology. One theory about its strange features is that Miranda is a second generation satellite, reassembled out of a shattered moon or moons.
I also just like the name.

Being new to this my first choice is of course our own satellite, the moon, second would be Io.

You are most welcome Balrog. I didn't want to step on anyone's toes and almost didn't bring it to your attention but when you said you might post this on your website, well the old teacher in me got the upper hand! This is a most interesting thread!

Other than our own Moon that shows us so much detail , I would say Saturns Moon "Mimas"!..So unique is the crater that has a diameter of about one fourth its size. 6 miles deep , its outer walls rising 3 miles high while its central peak soars 4 miles above the craters floor. Stress marks on the opposite hemisphere indicate that the impact came close to destroying the Moon.

Jupiter's hyper volcanic moon Io. If you ever get bored looking at it, just wait a year or two--it will change!

Hi Zwingli4
Sorry it took so long to answer.
Could you please elaborate on what your expecting to happen on Io and as it got anything to do with it´s geological structure ( volcanic activity ) ?
You have twinged my curiosity.

Great poll!
I add my vote for Luna.
It was the first astronomical object I saw though a telescope (a Sear's toy reflector).
It was THE first stop for humanity in space in the science fiction I read as a kid.
I agree with Leo731 its the one satellite I can look at in detail with my own two eyes (well... usually one )

I named my oldest daughter Miranda and my youngest daughter Charon. So I really can't answer this question without sounding biased. HA HA!
Fabulous topic, by the way!

Thanks Terry and stardoctobe for your input , it´s very much appreciated.
Terry, just out of interest, if we did not have a satellite of our own what would be your second choice and why ?
stardoctobe, what a fantastic idea naming your daughters Miranda and Charon, I will over look the fact that you have chosen two moons so that you wont have to make a choice between them. I will had both to the final result.
On the subject of Charon, do you know if the powers to be have decided if Charon is a satellite of Pluto or are they both going to be regarded as dwarf planets in the not too distant future ?

HI Balrog,
I guess my second choice would Europa. The thought that Europa may have an ocean of water under the ice that could habour life is fascinating.
The choice is tough though. It seems that most of the moons of the outer planets are handing out surprises these days.

Re: What is your favorite Moon (satellite) and why ?
I do not know if they have made their minds up about Charon and Pluto. I think Pluto should be a planet and was sad to see it taken off the list. They should at least wait until the probe gets there to get some scientific data, but that is just my opinion. In reality I just didn't want to have to learn a new memory device....my very energetic mother just served us nine pizzas....
Have a wonderful day!

I would have to vote for Miranda. The main reason is that i also the name of my Grand Daughter. It is also the strangest of monns in the solar system as it looks to be a bunch of pieces just clumped together Image is from here. along with other info.

Callisto for me. I love Jupiter, and this moon just struck me. It's the least noted of the Galilean satellites. (And for no reason.) It's not bad looking, contains a lot of beauty to me.

I'll have to say Mimas, because of its wonderfully odd name and the big crater on its side that makes it look like the Death Star.

This is an interesting poll. I'd have to say that one of my favorites is Hyperion.

However, Pan is also very intriguing because it is a shephard moon in the Encke gap.

Of course I believe Miranda is a pretty awesome moon considering its extreme geology.

Personally, I like Mimas. Talk about tenacity, the moon was nearly blown apart by a MAJOR impact that is evidenced on both sides of the moon. Besides, I always imagined Lucas had a better scope than anyone at the time and designed the Death Star after it! ;) "That's no moon." -Obi Wan Kenobi
