For me, it is not a matter of preference but using the right tool for the right job.

    How about compound telescopes?

Some people don't prefer neither reflectors or refractors, they prefer both in one package. Then on the other hand some people prefer one of each.

Nonetheless, I would have to agree with the above reply. It's a matter of using the right tool for the right job. This is why it is not uncommon for many amateur astronomer/stargazers to have multiple telescopes.

Hard to answer. I have 3 compound telescopes. The early stargazers didn't have as much to use as we do. I wonder what Galalio would think if he could see how his telescope turned out.

...Ok.But Galileo will be disappointed now that his telescope is competited by other types of telescopes.

Although I voted for reflector for the same reasons as those given by Akyra, refractors can be awfully nice, too, for crisp, sharp, clear images, portability and for terrestrial observing. Celestial images are one thing - who cares which way 'round the image of a star, galaxy, cluster, nebula, planet or comet is oriented? - but I have never been able to get used to looking at upside down images of birds and wildlife!
