Respite- respite and nepenthe, from thy memories of Lenore!
Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!"
                    Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotton lore,

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

Escape from the Headless Horseman, the old country wives believe, was not the fate of Ichabod Crane, "and the ploughboy, loitering homeward of a still summer evening, has often fancied his voice at a distance, chanting a melancholy psalm tune among the tranquil solitudes of Sleepy Hollow."

Owls have long been linked to magic and witchcraft, silent predators stalking the night; to Wordsworth they were "birds of doom".
